ULCERS

As per Ayurveda, in ulcers there is development of a sore on the lining of the oesophagus, stomach and/or small intestine. When stomach acid damages the lining of the digestive tract then ulcers may occurs in the digestive tract. The most common causes of ulcers include the H. Pylori bacteria and anti-inflammatory drugs (pain relievers) such as aspirin. This commonly causes upper abdominal pain.

TYPES OF ULCERS

    Gastric Ulcers:- The Ulcers that develop inside the gastric or stomach are known as Gastric Ulcers.

    Esophageal Ulcers:- The Ulcers that develop inside the esophagus is known as Esophageal Ulcers

 

    Duodenal Ulcers:- They develop in the upper section of the Small Intestines, that is why known as the Duodenal Ulcers.

SYMPTOMS OF THE ULCERS

    Burning sensation in stomach

    Pain in stomach

    Feeling of fullness

    Bloating

    Belching

    Intolerance to fatty foods

    Heartburn

    Nausea

    Vomiting

    Blood in vomiting (which may appear red or black)

    Dark blood in stools

    Stools that are black or tarry in color

    Difficulty in breathing

    Feeling of faint

    Unexplained weight loss

    Appetite changes

 

    Abdominal pain that may be worsen between meals and at night.

CAUSES

1.  Helicobacter Pylori Bacteria (H–Pylori bacteria)

2.  Regular use of Pain relievers

3.    Regular use of (NSAIDs) non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

4.    Regular use of Ibuprofen

5.    Use of Naproxen sodium (Aleve, Anaprox DS)

6.    Regular use of ketoprofen

7.    Regular use of anticoagulants like aspirin

8.    Regular use of (SSRIs) Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

9.    Regular use of alendronate (Fosamax) and risedronate (Actonel)

10.          Intake of H. pylori through food and water

11.          Intake of Acetaminophen (Tylenol)

RISK FACTORS OF ULCERS

    Smoking:- Smoking can increase the risk of peptic ulcers, especially in those who are patients of H. pylori infections.

    Drinking Alcohol:- Alcohol can erode and irritate the mucus membrane lining of your stomach, and it increases the production of acidic amount in the stomach.

    Stress and Depression:- Depression and Stress also causes the ulcers.

    Spicy Foods:- They can make ulcers worse and more difficult to heal.

 

COMPLICATIONS OF THE ULCER

As per Ayurveda specialist in India, if left untreated, peptic ulcers can cause following problems:- 

1)  Internal Bleeding:- Patient may suffer from anemia due to internal bleeding as a result of gradual blood loss. Severe blood loss can cause bloody or black vomit or bloody or black stools.

2)  A Hole Perforation (Hole) In Stomach Wall:- A hole through (perforate) the wall of the stomach or small intestine, can cause the risk of serious infection in the abdominal cavity (peritonitis).

3)  Obstruction:- The Peptic ulcers can block the passage of food via digestive tract. This can cause vomiting. It can also cause swelling and inflammation of the stomach.

 

4)  Gastric Cancer:- Studies have shown that patients who are infected with H. pylori infection have an increased risk of developing gastric cancer.
