Ayurveda is the science of healing through herbs and natural products. it is one of the oldest sciences and knowledge of the herbs to cure medical issues from its roots. One such issue is Kidney Stones, which is quite common these days.

Kidney Stones are also known as nephrolithiasis, renal calculi or urolithiasis. Renal calculi are the hard deposits made of salts and minerals that are formed inside the kidneys. Kidney stones or renal calculi may affect any part of the urinary tract system which includes Kidneys, Ureter, Urinary bladder and urethra. Kidney stones may occur when the urine becomes very concentrated, thereby allowing minerals to crystallize and stick to each other. Hence, these stones are hard crystal mass that builds up inside the kidney. Renal stones can be tiny or as large as a golf ball. Tiny stones can travel down through the urinary tract and excrete out from the urine without being even noticed. On the other hand, the large stones moves into ureter through the kidney and cause severe pain. Renal calculi are yellow or brown in colour.

Usually a kidney stone may not cause any symptoms until it moves around within the kidney or passes into the ureters (the tube that connects the kidneys and the bladder). If the stone gets intact into the ureter, it can block the flow of urine, and may cause swelling of the kidney and it can also cause the ureter to spasm.

  • Onset of severe cramping and sharp pain in the lower back and pelvic area and in the lower abdomen.
  • Pain that radiates to the lower abdomen and groin region.
  • Pain that spreads in waves and fluctuates in intensity.
  • Burning sensation or painful micturition while urinating.
  • Bleeding may be caused due to renal calculi. Due to this there is pink, red or brown colour urine.
  • Foul-smell
  • Cloudy urine
  • Frequent urge of micturition
  • Urinating in small amounts
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever and chills may be caused due to infection in urine

  • Dehydration
  • Imbalance of body fluids makes the urine concentrated
  • Chronic urinary tract infections
  • Cystic kidney disease
  • Overdose of pain killers
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Hereditary
  • Renal tubular acidosis
  • Hereditary metabolic disorders like cystinuria and hyperoxaluria
  • Certain foods can cause the formation of stones in the kidney
  • Other causes are hyperuricosuria
  • Gout
  • Excess intake of calcium and vitamin D
  • Blocked urinary tract
  • Environmental factors

  1. CALCIUM STONE:- This is most common type of stones which is present in the kidney which contains calcium, oxalate and phosphate. Many stones could be a combination of phosphate and calcium oxalate. High concentration of calcium in urine is called Hypercalciuria which can lead to formation of stones in the kidney. High levels of oxalate in the urine are known as Hyperoxaluria this may be caused due to faulty diet and genetic defects.
  1. STRUVITE STONES:– The struvite stones contains magnesium ammonium phosphate crystals that are caused after urinary tract infection. These types of kidney stones are more troublesome. This is most difficult to remove, it may require surgery.
  1. URIC ACID STONES:- Increased level of uric acid in the urinary tract is known as Hyperuricosuria, this leads to formation of uric acid stones. At low pH uric acid precipitates and at normal level pH it dissolves. The high urinary uric acid can be due to gout or high protein in diet.
  1. CYSTINE STONES:- The abnormal level of cystine in the urine is known as Cystinuria. It can build the stones into the kidney due to poor solubility in urine. Genetic factors also cause recurrent stone formation.

  2. CRIXIVAN STONES:- These stones are difficult to detect. This is caused due to indinavir, this is a treatment used in HIV patients. This easily percipitates and forms the crystals.

  3. AMMONIUM URIC ACID STONE:- This is seen in the patients with chronic intestinal disorders and users of frequent laxative. This type of kidney stones is very rare to be seen.

As per our Ayurveda doctors, there are some factors that increase the risk of developing kidney stones. These are mentioned below in details:-

  • GENETICS OR HEREDITARY HISTORY:- If someone has kidney stones in their family so s/he has more chances of developing stones in her/his kidneys too.
  • DEHYDRATION:-Not drinking enough water every day can increase the risk of kidney stones. People who live in dry and warm climates and those who sweat a lot may be at risk of developing renal calculi.
  • DIETATRY FACTORS:- Consuming diet that contains high protein, salt (sodium chloride) and sugar can increase the risk of renal stones. Intake of excess salt in your daily diet increases the amount of calcium in your kidneys and significantly increases the risk of kidney stones.
  • OBESITY OR OVER WEIGHT:- High body mass index (BMI), weight gain and large waist size have been linked to an increased risk of kidney stones.
  • DIGESTIVE DISORDERS OR SURGERY:- Inflammatory bowel disease, chronic diarrhea or Gastric bypass surgery can cause changes in the process of digestion that affect your absorption of water and calcium thereby increasing the risk of formation of stone substances in your kidneys and urine.
  • OTHER MEDICAL CONDITIONS:- Cystinuria, renal tubular acidosis, hyperparathyroidism and recurrent urinary tract infections can also increase the risk of formation of stones in your kidneys.
  • CERTAIN MEDICATIONS AND SUPPLEMENTS:-Excess use of laxatives, calcium-based antacids, vitamin C, dietary supplements, and certain medications used to treat depression and migraines, can increase the risk of formation of  stones into your kidneys.

Most often the renal calculus can be detected by X-Ray or Ultrasound or Sonogram. The diagnostic image provides the accurate information about location and size of the stone.

Urine and blood tests are also very helpful to detect the abnormal substances which may cause the formation of renal stones.

Another process is to scan the urinary tract using CT-Scan (computer Tomography) or CT-Urography and IVP that is Intravenous Pyelogram.

According to Ayurveda, kidney Stones are also known as Ashmari in Sanskit language. Ashmari comes from two words of Sanskrit language, i.e. ‘Ashma’ and ‘Ari.’ ‘Ashma’ means a stone or calculi and ‘Ari’ means enemy. Ashmari (calculi), specifically called as Moothrashmari in sanskrit language  means urolithiasis. It is a disease of Moothravahasrotas that is urinary tract system which is involved in the formation of calculus or stones. Due to stones, patient may suffer from severe pain similar to that of an enemy.

Herbal remedies in this Medicine hold a complementary approach in the prevention as well as management of the kidney stones.
