Cervical spondylosis

Cervical spondylosis or osteoarthritis of the neck is a common degenerative disease that affects millions of people worldwide. It usually gets worse with age. In cervical spondylosis, the materials that make up the upper vertebrae begin to change, losing their ability to cushion the neck. They are connected by cartilage that naturally wears away with age. Although some degree of degeneration of the spine is normal, some adults develop neck pain and stiffness due to aging.

Once the cartilage wears down and the lubrication is reduced, rough patches begin to develop on the spine. Cervical spondylosis occurs when the nerves attached to the spinal cord become compressed in the vertebrae as they exit the spine.

Our spine is a complex structure and if you stress it, such as by doing heavy work or lifting loads in awkward positions, it will naturally damage your stabilizing muscles and lead to spondylosis.  You will need to do about 15-20 physiotherapy sessions followed by 3 months of home physiotherapy exercises thrice or twice a day to get complete relief from your pain.  The two things you need most to get rid of cervical or lumbar spondylosis are your efforts and patience. First you should contact your physiotherapist as the exercise will need to be modified according to your recovery at certain times. Secondly wear the cervical collar and thirdly once you recover you should go about your daily workout.

Aging is a risk factor for cervical spondylosis. In addition to age, you’re more likely to experience neck pain or other symptoms related to cervical spondylosis if you:

  1. Addicted to excessive smoking.
  2. If other members of your family have this condi to ion.
  3. If the job often requires you to put stress on your neck, such as looking up or bending your head downward for many hours every day, or keeping your head in an improper position for long periods of time.
  4. If you have had a neck injury in the past, such as a car accident.
  5. If you do heavy lifting, such as a construction worker, or are exposed to a lot of vibration, such as a bus or truck driver.

Cervical spondylosis does not always cause symptoms. When your condition causes symptoms, conservative treatment is effective.

  • Physical therapy:

Certain exercises and stretches may relieve your symptoms.  Physical therapy focuses on stretching and strengthening your muscles and improving your posture. You can do this at home or get help from a physical therapist. Your health care provider will advise you to practice these exercises based on your individual symptoms and condition.

  • Ice, heat, and massage:

It can help relieve your symptoms. You should experiment with heat or cold conditions to see if they relieve your pain and discomfort. Do not apply heat or ice for more than twenty minutes and do so several times a day.  Massage is another option that is practiced on patients. Ask your healthcare provider if this is a reasonable option for your specific problem.

  • Oral medications:

Depending on how much pain you have, a healthcare provider can make a prescription. Muscle relaxants can treat muscle spasms. Medications are given as needed for severe arm pain from nerve impingement.

  • Soft collar or brace:

Your healthcare provider may suggest you wear a therapeutic collar for a short period of time. This can limit neck movement and help strained muscles rest and recover. Wearing the brace for too long can cause muscle wasting, so use the collar only under the guidance of a medical professional.
