CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS

DEFINITION

As the specialists in Ayurveda in India, one of the most common disorder that our Ayurveda doctors come across is Cervical Spondylosis. The condition of the inflammation of the cervical vertebra is known as Cervical Spondylosis. It is a devastating disorder that drastically impacts the joints and discs of the neck. This condition may develop after the age of 30. The main culprit behind the disorder of Cervical spondylosis the  wear and tear of cartilage and bones present in the cervical spine  in the neck. The bones and the protective cartilages in the neck are highly prone to wear and tear, which may result in the development of cervical spondylosis. Another major cause if this disorder is the skrinking of the space between two adjacent vertebrae.

When such condition develops then the nerve root emerges from the spinal cord which causes disturbance of sensory and motor which further leads leads to pain in the neck, shoulder, arm, and back. It is also accompanied by muscle weakness. This condition is known as Radiculopathy. Cervical Spondylosis commonly affects the people of middle-aged and older-aged. Commonly after the age of 50 or 60 the discs of the cervical spine gradually break down, lose fluids and become stiffer, this is caused due to deficiency of calcium and vitamin D in the bones. While some people never experience this disorder, however, for some it becomes chronic. The disorder leads to suffering from severe pain and stiffness in the affected. People with less calcium diet and low bone density are prone to this disease.

CAUSES OF CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS

Based on the rigorous research and observation of our Ayurveda doctors , some of the reasons for Cervical Spondylosis given below in details:–

  1. BONE SPURS:- According to medical specialists the body tries to grow extra bones to make the spinal vertebra stronger. However, the extra growth of bones presses the delicate areas of spine, therefore, resulting in the painful vertebra and nerves. This condition is known as bone spur.

  2. DEHYDRATED SPINAL DISCS:- Generally the spinal cord has discs in between. These discs are thick pads, cushions-like structures that absorb the shock of twisting, lifting and other activities. In some cases, the CSF i.e. cerebrospinal fluid (gel like material inside disc) gets dried out. In this condition the vertebral bones are in friction with each other. This causes severe pain in the neck.

  3. HERNIATED DISCS:- In some cases the spinal discs develop cracks due to which there is leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (the gel like material). This cerebrospinal fluid can pass over the spinal cord and spinal nerves, which leads to pain and numbness in the shoulders and arms.

  4. INJURY:- When an injury occurs due to accident or fall, then it can cause cervical spondylosis.

  5. STIFFNESS OF LIGAMENT:- In this condition the tough cords that connect the spinal bones to each other become stiffer over time, which ultimately causes pain and affects the movement of the neck.

  6. OVERWORK:– In some hobbies or occupations heavy lifting or repetitive movements or constructing work is involved, which can put the weight and pressure on the spinal vertebra, and ultimately lead to early wear and tear, so this results cervical spondylosis.

RISK FACTORS OF CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS

  • Holding your neck in an appropriate position for a longer time
  • Injury
  • Aging is the major factor for developing Cervical Spondylosis
  • Heavy lifting work that leads to strain on your back
  • Genetic factors
  • Smoking
  • Being overweight
  • Inactive or laziness
  • Repetitive stress

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS

    • Muscle spasm or muscle weakness

    DIAGNOSIS OF THE CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS

This involves the testing for movement and determining the affected bones, muscles and nerves. Diagnosis help the specialists, be it Ayurveda, allopathy Or homeopathy, to understand the magnitude of the disorder.

    PHYSICAL EXAMINATION:-

Your physician may analysis your disease by asking several questions regarding sign and symptoms. He may further analyse your body movement and structure through tests. Typical exams are given below:-

    • Check muscle weakness
    • Test reflexes
    • Range of movements of neck

    IMAGING TEST:-

    • X-RAY – X-Rays are used to check any abnormality or bone spur of the cervical vertebra.
    • CT SCAN – CT Scan helps to detect more detailed images of the neck.
    • MRI CS SPINE – MRI helps to locate the pinched nerves
    • EMG – EMG test helps to measure the elasticity of the nerve
    • NERVE CONDUCTING STUDY – It is used to check the strength and speed of the signals which are sent by the nerves

    CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA

According to Ayurveda, an ancient science of healing that utilizes the herbs for treating the disease for centuries, Cervical Spondylosis is known as Grivasandhigatvata. It is caused due to the vitiated vata dosha in the body. There are numerous reasons for the vitiation of the vata dosha in the body. The main cause of vitiation of vata dosha is constipation due to which the gas formation occurrs which further leads to pain in the head, neck and shoulders. There are some other reasons due to which proliferation of Vata is caused, some of these are, intake of excessive cool, dry, light, salted and gas causing foods, and having more of sour, bitter foods, increased gaps between the two meals, and consuming astringent food items, smoking, late night work schedule, and a lifestyle involving over-indulgence in physical, sexual and mental activities. Stress is also another culprit that leads to cervical spondylosis.
