The fragrant roots of Anantmool (Indian sarsaparilla) or (Hemidesmus indicus) are used in medicines preparation in India.

The volatiles obtained by steam distillation (yield, 0.25%) containes 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde (91%) and (−) ledol (4.5%), in pure form, these are isolable, and these chemicals are the major constituents of herb anantmool.

The GC–MS analysis of the residual oil, it contains over 40 minor constituents.

Among them, isocaryophyllene (0.1%), borneol (0.3%), nerolidol (1.2%), linalyl acetate (0.2%), dihydrocarvyl acetate (0.1%), α-terpinyl acetate (traces), salicylaldehyde (0.1%), and 1,8-cineol (traces), these are bio-active principles of this herb and important as aromatic.

  1. ROOTS:-

The roots of Anantmool are a twining, perennial, slender, undershrub with woody and fragrant rootstock. The roots of anantmool are mainly used for the preparation of Ayurvedic medicinal purpose. Roots occur in the form of pieces, these are about 30 cm long and 3-8 mm in diameter, cylindrical, thick, hard, and somewhat tortuous, sparsely branched. These are provided with few thick rootlets and secondary roots, externally appear dark brown in colour, and sometimes it is found with violet grey tinge. The center of the roots is woody. The colour of the roots is yellowish. The colour of bark is brown, corky, and it is also marked with transverse cracks and with longitudinal fissures. This is surrounded by a mealy white layer of cortical. The roots of the anantmool are hard from the central core and are easily detachable. The roots are sweetish in taste, and has a characteristic odour which is slightly acrid and aromatic. The root of this herb can be dried for later use and harvested in the autumn.


The stems and branches are elongated with narrow surface, and twine anticlockwise. These are tereteand of a deep purple or purplish brown in colour. The surface of this is slightly ridged at the nodes.


The leaves of Anantmool are opposite to one another, these are smooth, shiny, and firm in texture. These vary in size and shape according to their age.


The Anantmool flowers are Greenish yellowish to greenish ourpke to outside and dull yellowish in color. They are light purplish colored from inside. These are corolla gamopetalous and calyx deeply five lobed, about twice the calyx, stamens five, inserted near base of corolla which has a thick coronal scale.


The fruits of anantmool herb are two straight slender, divergent follicles and narrowly cylindrical widely. The fruits contain many the seeds, they are flat oblong in shape, with a long tuft of white silky hairs in it.
